The ACT is either an alternative or a supplement to the SAT and is growing in popularity among universities.
Administered six times a year by ACT, Inc., the ACT is a more well rounded test that includes a wider range of topics. Here are some important facts you should know.
The ACT contains four or five sections: English, math, reading, science, and an optional writing section. Possible scores for each section range from 1 to 36, -- each are compiled into your final composite score, which also ranges from 1 to 36.
The highest score on the ACT is a 36 with the average student scoring a 21. However, each subject has a "College Readiness Benchmark." They are -- English: 18, Reading: 21, Math: 22, and Science: 24.
The ACT optional essay is administered at the end of the test, lasts 30 minutes, and is graded on a scale of 2 to 12. Although optional, a majority of colleges required an essay score.
ACT scores can be sent to four colleges free of charge. Additional scores can be sent for $9.00 each, paid to ACT, Inc.
