The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is generally administered by high schools once a year during the student's sophomore or junior year.
The PSAT is used as a rough indicator for performance on the SAT. Most importantly, it is the primary benchmark for National Merit Scholarships.
The PSAT contains three sections: critical reading, math, and writing, with possible scores for each section ranging from 20-80.
The highest score on the PSAT is a 240, but the average sophomore scores a 128 and juniors score a 147.
The PSAT begins with a 25 minute essay that is factored into the writing score. The score ranges from 2-12, with the average being a 7.
