The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) has been labeled the second most important part of college admissions.

Administered seven times a year by the College Board, the SAT is the most common test taken by high school juniors and seniors.  Here are some important facts you should know.

The SAT contains three sections: critical reading, math, and writing, with possible scores for each section ranging from 200-800.  Most universities disregard the writing section.

The highest score on the SAT is a 2400, but the average student scores a 1511.  Broken out by subject, the averages are Critical Reading: 502, Math: 515, and Writing: 494.

The SAT begins with a 25 minute essay that is factored into the writing score.  The score ranges from 2-12, with the average being a 7.

SAT scores can be sent to four colleges free of charge.  Additional scores can be sent for $9.50 each, paid to the College Board.
